National Undergraduate Neuroanatomy Competition
National Undergraduate Neuroanatomy Competition 2019
NUNC 2019 celebrated its seventh year and was bigger and better than ever.
Medical students from Edinburgh to Exeter and Galway to George’s all descended on the Centre for Learning Anatomical Sciences, Southampton on Saturday 23rd Feb. 2019 to compete in the competition.
The morning was spent with competitors completing the practical spot test and the written MCQ test and after lunch attendees were treated to two inspiring talks, the first of which was from Prof. Tom Gillingwater from University of Edinburgh on how much research has yet to be done on the human neuromuscular junction since until recently it has been assumed that animal models are transferable to human tissue. After a brief break for cheese and wine, the second talk by Prof. William Gray from University of Cardiff explained how neurogenesis in the hippocampus allows for the emotional responses to past experiences.
During the breaks, competitors were welcomed over to the Anatomical Society stall to find out more about student membership and the role of the society, who remain proud sponsors of this event. Several members of the Anatomical Society attended the event and formed part of the exam marking and invigilating teams. Founders of the competition, Dr. Scott Border and Dr. Samuel Hall, were present throughout the day making sure the event ran smoothly along with their impressive team of Southampton students, alumni, staff and family members.
The day was finished off with the announcements of winners and this year the top prizes went to Shuler Men Xu (preclinical winner) and Dom Mahoney (clinical winner) both from University of Bristol, and Sushil Rodrigues Ranjan from Dundee (preclinical runner up) and Thomas Fowler from St George's(clinical runner up). The top ten non-winners also received distinction awards as seen in the pictures. Congratulations to all!
National Undergraduate Neuroanatomy Competition 2018
The NUNC 2018 was a well-organised day-long event sponsored by the AS (Anatomical Society) held in the Southampton General Hospital on the 24th March 2018. Undergraduate medical students from all over the UK including prestigious British & Irish medical schools participated in this competition. Much enthusiasm could be observed within the participants and overall the event was a great success! The event was amply covered in various social media portals including Twitter & Facebook. A merchandising stall was set on behalf of AS. Plenty of interactions happened with various students. The message of the AS with its membership options were discussed with the students at multiple occasions. The students were encouraged to apply for membership through the society’s online portal.
On Saturday 8th April 2017, the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Southampton, in association with The Anatomical Society of Great Britain and Ireland hosted its fifth National Undergraduate Neuroanatomy Competition. One hundred and nine medical students from across the UK and Ireland attended the one-day conference that was designed to inspire and enhance the knowledge and skills of budding neurologists, psychiatrists and neurosurgeons. Taking place at University Hospital Southampton, competitors sat both a multiple choice paper and a neuroanatomy spotter. The overall winner was Alexander Sheeka from Southampton, obtaining the highest score ever recorded at the competition. We were honoured to have with us special guest speakers Professor Zoltan Molnar (University of Oxford) and Professor Karen Morrison (University of Southampton) who gave exhilarating talks in the afternoon.
This year’s event was led by final year medical student, Simon McElligott, who worked with a dedicated team of students, faculty staff and clinicians. The competition has continued to grow, attracting an increasing number of attendees each year. The organisers would like to thank everyone who has supported and helped the event become a success particularly The Centre for Learning Anatomical Sciences, The Anatomical Society, Thieme and Wolters Kluwer.
