Green Man festival: Hand painting with the Anatomical Society
On 21st and 22nd Aug with the removal of social distancing restrictions, the Green Man festival returned for Summer 2021 bringing music and science to the Brecon Beacons in Wales. In Einstein’s Garden, the Anatomical Society ran anatomy body painting classes on the Saturday and Sunday in the Workshop dome led by Prof Abigail Tucker. The focus for the sessions was the hand, and visitors enjoyed painting the bones and muscles on their own hands and learning how they function to allow movement of the fingers and wrist. The workshop was very busy with hand painters, ranging from 3 to 60 years old, learning about the phalanges, metacarpals and carpals and how they got their names. Body painting is a great way to learn about anatomy, allowing you to feel structures and then paint them. The hand not only has a complex anatomy to learn but also allows you to paint yourself, so that everyone could join in. The resulting hands were impressive, and everyone attending enjoyed learning by painting. A great “hands on” activity for all.
